Labor Day Holiday Hours http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/273-labor-day-holiday-hours.html Blog Thu, 29 Aug 2013 14:53:55 +0000 HTML 5 Trends and Learning Platforms http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/270-html-5-trends-and-learning-platforms.html How do you access the Internet and your online courses? If you're like most people in 2013, it's probably from a lot of different devices--desktop PCs, tablets, mobile phones, maybe even a wi-fi connected television.

Providing the code to display content in a uniform way across all of these devices might be a technology called HTML5. It's gaining increasing support in the developer community. From gaming apps to dynamic page layouts, HTML5 offers the promise of cross-platform support at a lower price of development.

Browsers like Chrome are leading the way with better HTML5 support. And course authoring tools like Articulate Storyline are now outputting to HTML5 with capabilities on par with Flash. For the end user, it means more engaging yet fully accessible learning content, anytime, anywhere.

 HTML5

Educadium has been incorporating HTML5 developments into its LMS road map and course development projects. Some are available for view on our demonstration sites. Educadium can even offer your EasyCampus LMS site an HTML5 video player to help you embed HTML5-authored videos in your courses.

Recently, Educadium President Todd Harris sat down with LMS consultancy Tagoras to discuss some of the trends in HTML5 and how it's impacting the learning management market. Check out the audio interview.

HTML5 is just one option in developing course content. Do you have questions about how to support your users across multiple digital devices? Contact us. Let us help you devise a cross-platform hosting and course strategy that works for your budget.

Forecasting for Learning Executives http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/266-forecasting-for-learning-executives.html The slow-growth economy has had a big impact on all organizations, large and small. Even as some business sectors make a comeback, most business leaders and learning executives remain uncertain and cautious about their prospects in 2013.

That uncertainty impacts directly the budgets of training professionals, educators, and HR directors.

According to a recent U.S. study, the outlook for training fell for the third straight quarter in late 2012. This comes from research for the Learning Executive Confidence Index (LXCI).

The good news? These scores remain higher than they were in 2009 and 2010 when the economy was at its lowest point. The LXCI is a six-month measurement of attitudes by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD).

Some interesting highlights from the LXCI study:

  • 70% of learning executives believe corporate performance will be better in the next six months.
  • 56% believe the resources needed to meet training goals will be the same or worse in early 2013.
  • 51.4% think that over the next six months, training will improve organizational performance.

So while the near term is a bit cloudy, most learning professionals expect the training function will receive greater attention and higher funding within the next year. However, almost half feel that there will be an increase within 18 months.

What does this mean for your organization? You have to do more with less, especially in the first half of 2013. Learning management and course development must be accomplished in an environment of reduced funding. Look to vendors and partners (including Educadium) that can best stretch your dollars for hosting and content development.

Need answers about accomplishing your training goals through affordable learning management strategies? Contact us at info@educadium.com.

Online Education Grows and Grows http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/264-online-education-grows-and-grows.html Is your organization changing with the times?

Except when there are major tipping points, we often forget about the ongoing transformations going on with technology right under our feet.

According to Professor Doug Ward, fast Internet connections, computers and smart phones now provide easy and unprecedended access to online material. This creates the potential to "speak with, work with, and learn from nearly anyone in the world."

Ward says that information (once something people had to seek out) now flows easily to them. For trainers and educators, the changes have major implications.

It's possible now to capture voice lectures and training and put it online at very little cost. Inexpensive storage on platforms like those offered by Educadium has made retrieval cheap and easy. The iPad and other on-the-go tools have provided portable means of accessing and creating information.

The upshot? Your organization may need to move more agressively to keep up with your computer-savvy workforce and user base.

In the book Liberating Learning, Moe and Chubb say that this technological transformation is "reshaping the fundamentals of how human beings from every corner of the globe communicate, interact, conduct their business, and simply live their lives from day to day." This will mean a system-wide change in the processes used to teach, learn and train.

It's an exciting time!

Live Online Classroom Tips http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/263-live-online-classroom-tips.html Self-paced learning has taken the training world by storm.

It's cost-effective, media-rich, and convenient for end-users and admins. The expenses are upfront, but once content is built and deployed professionally on a good LMS (hint, hint), self-paced learning pays big dividends. Educadium is a leader in hosted self-paced training and other online learning methods.

But it's a big world online, so it's always smart to look at alternative and complimentary training and education methods.

Training consultant Cindy Huggett is a big fan of synchronous virtual training--in other words, webinars, whiteboarding, screensharing, and live virtual classrooms. These one-to-many and many-to-many sessions can produce terrific learning outcomes.

So if you thought webinars were just for marketers, then it's time to think again.

A good virtual experience takes time and planning. What is the best way to engage a global audience in a live training session? Huggett has some tips for trainers:

  • use visuals
  • speak slowly
  • choose words carefully
  • post discussion questions either on screen or in a chat window
  • call on participants by name
  • and be mindful of potential language limitations

She also recommends working with at least one more person, a producer to help with questions and technology issues. Huggett has some solid advice and resources for facilitating a virtual training session.

At Educadium, we think live meetings add vibrancy and diversity (and even revenue) to any learning site. Moreover, they can be recorded and re-purposed into valuable course content in a self-paced environment.

Need more information? Our team can show you how to incorporate synchronous learning strategies into your Educadium site.

Planning A Great Online Course http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/260-planning-a-great-online-course.html We speak to a lot of people who are transitioning from live classroom to online instruction.

One of the first questions we ask is: "Do you have any course materials?'

The answer is usually "Yes, we have great course content."

Unfortunately, most of those materials were conceived for live instruction. Self-paced courses are very different from on-ground classroom training. Order, structure, and interactive materials must substitute for that smiling trainer at the podium, who is often conveying more enthusiasm than information.

Says Dr. Joel Gendelman in a recent article: "Customizing or creating virtual instruction is more demanding than putting together face-to-face training. In a face-to-face class, you have a great deal of social presence by virtue of your being physically in the same room."

We find that many trainers underestimate the translation from live to virtual training. For most first-time online trainers, we recommend that they work with a professional consultant to help them with the transition. Many new steps and processes must be considered, and you'll need to pull together that virtual "shoebox" of learning materials, probably scattermed among different employees and desktops. However, the extra upfront time and expense will pay big dividends in user satisfaction.

There are some big differences in delivery as you move forward. In a classroom, for instance, we might be OK watching a 60 minute video. But online on a PC or iPad, users are less patient and might tolerate only a few minutes of passive viewing at a time. Rather, learners welcome numerous short video clips as they move through a course. In other words, the outcomes might be the same but the learning path and structure are very different.

The key in setting up a successful online course is to first take an inventory of your instructional assets. These can be PowerPoints, manuals, videos, or existing online courseware. When these materials are categorized (the virtual shoebox), we can then match them to their proper place in the course outline. Next, we might consider layout, branding and other learning objects that can be incorporated within a professional learning management platform.

At the same time, it's important to review the content. Is it a 20 year-old VHS, which will seem dated even if digitized? You might wish to author new materials or make content enhancements that would improve user engagement and success. A virtual instruction planning form and a good instructional designer will make the process much easier.

Just throwing up a musty PowerPoint and quiz are not enough these days to satisfy demanding learners, who respond to interactive multimedia and well-designed courses.

Educadium's Professional Services team has a lot of experience in this area and can work with organizations of all sizes and budgets. Contact us to learn more about planning your first online course.

Protecting Privacy for Online Training http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/256-protecting-privacy-for-online-training.html Recently, the White House unveiled its Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights as part its larger privacy initiative. It's an important topic for trainers and educators, who must oversee sensitive data and who are accountable to regulators and accrediting bodies.

You can download the document here.

The report describes seven key consumer privacy principles.

"By following this blueprint, companies, consumer advocates and policymakers can help protect consumers and ensure the Internet remains a platform for innovation and economic growth," said President Obama.

Working with TRUSTe, the leading privacy organization, Educadium has made every attempt to protect our customers and end users. Please see our privacy policy. We don't sell user or course-related data. We also encourage our EasyCampus owners to communicate their own privacy guidelines to their users.

According to TRUSTe, organizations should familiarize themselves with the Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights, which will likely become a blueprint for potential legislation and an enforcement guideline for the Federal Trade Commission, which is active in the privacy space.

The new privacy framework will work towards:

* Individual Control: Consumers have a right to exercise control over what personal data companies collect from them and how they use it.* Transparency: Consumers have a right to easily understandable and accessible information
about privacy and security practices.
* Respect for Context: Consumers have a right to expect that companies will collect, use, and
disclose personal data in ways that are consistent with the context in which consumers
provide the data.
* Security: Consumers have a right to secure and responsible handling of personal data.
*  Access and Accuracy: Consumers have a right to access and correct personal data in usable
formats, in a manner that is appropriate to the sensitivity of the data and the risk of adverse
consequences to consumers if the data is inaccurate.
* Focused Collection: Consumers have a right to reasonable limits on the personal data that
companies collect and retain.
*  Accountability: Consumers have a right to have personal data handled by companies with
appropriate measures in place to assure they adhere to the Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights.

Educadium takes the privacy of its subscribers very seriously, and we never market user data. It's a fast-changing world, but we want to be a long-term partner our subscribers can trust.

Why Choose a Cloud-Hosted LMS? http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/252-why-choose-a-cloud-hosted-lms.html Discussing the Internet these days is a bit like talking about the weather.

Take cloud computing. Educadium's EasyCampus uses the cloud to provide superior performance at affordable prices.

The cloud has been around in different guises, but the combination of the Internet, virtualization, hardware advances, and open source software has pushed it to the forefront. Attitudes are changing, too.

Gartner predicts that cloud computing will be a $150 billion market by 2013. In another study from Mimecast, 57% of respondents felt that cloud computing increased their security when compared to traditional methods for computing and data back up.

The cloud means lower-cost services, greater IT flexibility, and better user experiences. For EasyCampus subscribers, the ROI afforded by a cloud-hosted LMS allows them to focus on creating great elearning content rather than hiring technical staff or adding servers during periods of user growth.

 Clouds

Over the past 4 years, Educadium's engineers have created an advanced, state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure, which uses Amazon Web Services. Our massive computing capacity can handle growth, and our architecture is designed to scale into the thousands and even millions of users. The benefits: minimal latency, reliability and superb global reach.

EasyCampus uptime in 2011 was in excess of 99.99%, with an average response rate of less than 690 ms. EasyCampus servers had 100% uptime in December--not bad! Such reliability is made easier with a cloud-hosted LMS infrastructure.

The cloud will continue to evolve, and the Internet will have its occasional hiccups. That's to be expected. In 2012, we'll continue to leverage the best cloud-hosted LMS technologies in order to offer reliable, affordable services to growing learning organizations.

Resolutions for Better Course Management http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/249-resolutions-for-better-course-management.html Welcome to 2012!

After returning from holiday festivities, managers are thinking hard about how to use new technologies--like cloud-hosted platforms--more effectively. Training to boost productivity is high on the list.

Is this the year that your organization focuses on online training and education as a mission-critical part of the business? We certainly hope so, and Educadium's EasyCampus learning management products will be there to help.

But it takes planning and resolve to get those old PowerPoints and videos off of the CDs and into a web-accessible, self-paced training program.

 Checklist

Here are some "resolutions" and tips that might help get you over the finish line:

  • Decide why you want to manage your courses and training online. Sounds simple but it's not, especially if you've been doing on-ground training for years. Online is a very different beast, and the materials may be presented differently. Keep your goals in mind as you face the challenges.

Do you want to save money? Make money from tuition courses? Improve accessibility and convenience for your employees or members? If you don't have a compelling reason to move educational materials online, it will be difficult to champion the cause internally. With clear objectives, you'll be able to focus your priorities as you plan your training site and courses.
  • Take stock of your digital and traditional assets. Think about your current website outlets and how (and where) they could link to your new training materials. Or maybe you want your new educational site to pull double-duty as your main web presence. Take time to consult with your website managers, marketers, and mobile specialists and map out your requirements. If you have accreditation or regulatory guidelines, take time to review these to make sure your online plans conform to these requirements. You might be able to move all or only a portion of your training online.

Next, itemize all of the assets sitting around the office that could be used in an online course--manuals, PowerPoints, videos, even lecture notes. The more planning you do, the more informed you'll be when researching learning management options.

At this stage, don't worry about what the online course will look like or what tools you will use. Just put together a spreadsheet with all of your media assets in one place. Remember: The more you do on your own, the less it's going to cost you.
  • Be realistic about your budget. We know that money is tight, and we designed our service to be affordable. Among elearning companies, there are many options--from free services to million-dollar contractors. Focus your efforts on partners that meet your budget parameters and be upfront about it. Internally, don't forget to allocate money for staffing and administration. Somebody will need to manage the users and update materials. Admin training should also be part of the budget.

If your budget is next to nothing, then you may need to hold off on super-interactive, multimedia course materials. Yes, we know that everyone loves video, but Hollywood production values come with a price. You can still create effective, attractive courses with quizzes and certificates. Our EasyCampus platform works well for all sorts of course materials and styles--page-turning ebooks or interactive SCORM packages.
  • Learn the lingo. No, you don't need to be some elearning specialist or instructional designer. But read up on common features of learning management systems and course-authoring tools. Decide if it's important whether the LMS is hosted or if you need it installed at your enterprise. (EasyCampus is available only as a hosted platform.) Sketch out the desired user experience, starting with the registration process to the homepage, courses, and admin reporting.

Some learning systems come packaged with a lot of features--but you might be paying for things you don't need. Ask to play around with a free version or look at the demo. We have a free product called EasyCampus Express, and it's good for up to 25 registered users. Ask for a phone call or a live webinar if you still have questions.
  • Start now, start small.  If your team is inexperienced, you'll need to work more closely with a qualified vendor or instructional designer--on course planning, production, and hosting. Research different companies and even use a consultant if necessary. But don't get paralyzed by feature comparisons. Find a company (or two) that you can relate to and that fills your key requirements. Then get going. You'll probably want to change things as you go, and that's to be expected. Along the way, your team will gain valuable elearning experience.

There's no excuse for waiting another year!

Educadium's team is here to jump-start your efforts when you're ready--from hosting your current elearning materials to helping design an entire online training program from scratch. Email info@educadium.com to get going.

New EasyCampus ePortfolio Add-On Released http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/241-new-easycampus-eportfolio-add-on-released.html Educadium is pleased to announce the availability of the new EasyCampus ePortfolio Add-On.

For more than a decade, ePortfolios (or electronic portfolios) have been used in academic settings to help students share important digital work with their teachers and fellow students. Increasingly, ePortfolios are being used to assess (or grade) classroom efforts, especially as a collection of coursework over a period of time.

Corporate trainers are also finding many important uses for ePortfolios. Users can safely store materials, such as resumes and videos, which may be shared later with mentors or prospective employers. It's both a learning tool within a course and a record of achievement.

 ePortfolio Icon

The EasyCampus ePortfolio Add-On is a great addition to any learning management platform. It's also a big selling point to students and end-users, providing higher satisfaction during and even after course completion.

The ePortfolio Add-On lets administrators add a block to an EasyCampus course or landing page. In a secure environment, users can share their work with external parties or with other course members. Students are able to download and save their entire ePortfolios in a SCORM format.

Shareable items include:

  • Personal Information (e.g., a résumé or CV)
  • Links
  • Files
  • Notes
  • EasyCampus Assignments

The ePortfolio can be purchased online today. The one-time $795 fee includes installation and custom configuration for one ePortfolio block. Questions? Contact info@educadium.com.

In fact, EasyCampus was operational late Thursday--ahead of many other leading websites. Access has been restored to thousands of users around the world.

Nevertheless, some EasyCampus may still be experiencing minor latency issues for brief periods of time. This is expected today, and users should clear their browswer cache and retry. More persistent access issues should be reported immediately to support@educadium.com.

We believe in reliable service. Everyone at Educadium will stay on the case until we and our EasyCampus customers are fully satisfied.

Amazon EC2 Outage Update http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/233-amazon-ec2-outage-update.html
As of Thursday afternoon EST, access to Educadium's EasyCampus LMS platform remains limited. A partial failure at Amazon Web Services' cloud-computing infrastructure is to blame, affecting Educadium as well as thousands of other companies. Educadium's web site and support areas remain operational.

According to CNET, the outage struck the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service at Amazon's northern Virginia site. The problems began at 1:41 a.m. PT.

Educadium's IT team is working to rebuild the disk images in a new availability zone unaffected by the outage. Access to EasyCampus sites could occur later this afternoon.

Educadium has built a reliable e-learning architecture on top of Amazon's global cloud platform. Fortunately, these occurrences are rare but are nonetheless frustrating for us and our customers.

We'll post more information as we get it.

UPDATE: As of 9:20pm EST/6:20pm PST, access to EasyCampus sites is being restored with most sites fully operational. We are continuing to monitor the situation for quality assurance.

Associations Embrace Online Education http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/227-associations-embrace-online-education.html In the popular imagination, distance education is something for virtual high schools and for-profit universities. The truth is far different. Online learning has penetrated every aspect of our educational and training lives.

Over 1.5 million nonprofits were registered with the Internal Revenue Service in 2008. Charities, religious groups, and trade associations are eager to communicate and educate their stakeholders on important issues. That's where online learning tools can help.

According to a new report from Ambient Insight, the demand for self-paced online learning by associations will grow a healthy 14.3% annually over the next five years. Here's what the latest survey says:

Associations spend over $6.2 billion annually on educational events and until recently, most of those events were in physical venues. Associations were once slow adopters of learning technology in general, but this is no longer true. This segment is moving fast to Self-paced eLearning. The current forecast has been revised significantly upward from previous forecasts.

Association members are busy, successful people. For convenience, it makes sense to move training and continuing education from onsite to online venues. Certainly, trade shows, local networking events, and annual conferences will continue to be important aspects of association membership. Going forward, expect a healthy mix of face time and technology to match members with skills and business opportunities.

Using our EasyCampus learning platform, Educadium has built and hosted a number high-quality online schools and training programs for leading nonprofit groups like the NW Public Power Association. Contact us if you'd like to learn more about our growing nonprofit practice.

All indications are that associations are ready and willing to embrace convenient and affordable e-learning tools.

Corporate E-Learning Programs That Work http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/225-corporate-e-learning-programs-that-work.html The problem with many corporate training programs is not the eye-numbing content or the rules for compliance. Rather, it's forcing harried employees to bend their schedules in order to participate in inconvenient on-site programs, which compromise workers' personal or professional lives.

Thankfully, may companies and nonprofits are getting the message. In an interesting article by Anna Tims from The Guardian in the UK, firms are "waking up to the advantages of informal training managed by individuals around their own timetables."

 Clock

For example, Cable & Wireless lets staff access online libraries of content, recorded webinars, and other personal development materials. It's a buffet-style, do-it-yourself approach to online learning and career development.

Jane Hart, founder of the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies, says companies shouldn't try to act like universities: "There is a heavy focus on designing formal content-rich courses, pushed down to end-users, and managed, tracked and monitored in command and control systems." Informal and more social aspects of learning are now in vogue.

Some additional e-learning tips and tricks for up-and-coming learning organizations:

Know what's out there. Provide access to free lectures, videos and modules on iTunes, YouTube, or the UK's Open University.

Share the pain. Enlist support from internal champions who can set targets and timetables. Recruit colleagues who are motivated by e-learning trends and social networking.

Stay focused.  Workers should have enough time for e-learning and avoid the temptation to cram it in all in at once. The best formats are organized into frequent, short periods of study--for instance, 15 minutes at the start of work, 15 minutes at lunch, and another 15 minutes in the evening.

Know your goals. Strong learning organizations understand and communicate the benefits of e-learning and what employees can get out of it.

As you can see, very little of this really about the technology. Rather, it's about coming up with new ways of thinking about time-shifted, self-paced, self-directed learning. The best e-learning programs accommodate the needs of the modern firm and the busy lives of employees.

Better Prices for LMS Services http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/224-better-prices-for-lms-services-.html Maybe it's our frugal, family-business roots. Or it could be the tough economic times we see for organizations of all sizes.

Whatever the reason, Educadium has a driving mission to make world-class e-learning, corporate training, and distance education more affordable and convenient. Sadly, until inflated training costs are cut down to size, many serious educators (especially in developing economies) will be unable to take advantage of online course delivery.

With free versions and monthly subscriptions starting at just $39 a month, we think we offer the best value for today's online trainers and educators. But don't take our word for it--ask the thousands of happy users around the world who use EasyCampus.

Our team works extra hard to reduce costs so that we can pass along the savings.

 EasyCampus Add-On Sale Icon

This week, we're happy to announce an Add-On sale with even better pricing for 2011. Our EasyCampus Add-Ons are optional features and subscriptions tailored for special learning needs for EasyCampus owners--from additional storage and Google Apps to custom URLs and Professional Services. We've slashed prices by as much as $500 for many of these powerful products.

For example, take our Questionnaire Maker for creating compelling online surveys. In 2010, it was $995. Now it's $795--a $200 savings. Every Add-On comes with detailed Step Guides and personalized service during set up.

If you're an EasyCampus subscriber, you can purchase an Add-On through our online store. An Educadium representative will contact you about service details and installation. You just might save some money!

E-Commerce for Learning Management http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/223-e-commerce-for-learning-management.html With the New Year upon us, it's time to follow through on those annual resolutions. For many EasyCampus owners, that wish involves the creation of shiny new courses and cost-effective ways to profit from online learning.

Educadium's EasyCampus Virtual School Builder LMS platform includes a built-in way to sell courses. It's called CampusPay, and there is no charge to set up the service.

Once enabled by our Support team, your courses can be offered for any price you choose. Your learners will be directed to PayPal, where they can pay by credit card or with their PayPal account. Once payment is verified, they are automatically brought back to your EasyCampus and enrolled in their chosen course.

Once a month, our EasyCampus owners are paid for all of their course transactions, less a 5% transaction fee that covers all fees, accounting, and customer support. It's a no-muss, no-fuss way of handling e-commerce.

But we know that some organizations want to manage their own payments, with the tuition monies going directly into their PayPal account.

Credit Card

That's why we've created a new option called the EasyCampus Custom Tuition Payment Add-On.

The Custom Tuition Payment tool lets you charge tuition for your courses and receive payments instantly from students via credit cards or PayPal. You just need an email address that is linked to your PayPal account, which must be in good standing.

For a one-time fee of $295, you can offer an unlimited number of tuition-based courses on your EasyCampus. Pricing includes installation and testing. Compare this with the standard EasyCampus CampusPay system and decide which solution meets your needs for the New Year.

Online Training Goes to the Dogs http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/220-online-training-goes-to-the-dogs.html Our EasyCampus clients are doing remarkable things with online training and education.

Take Doggone Crazy!, a Canadian company dedicated to dog-bite prevention and training. The school's Basic Dog Body Language class describes many dog body language signs that help us understand what dogs might be feeling.

"By learning to speak dog, we can take steps to reduce anxiety that we may be inadvertently causing our pets,” says Toronto-based course creator Joan Orr, a scientist and internationally recognized expert in clicker training.

 Doggone Crazy

It's pretty interesting stuff for a self-paced training course--and only $30. Read more about this innovative online training program.

You don't have to bark like a dog to develop a great online school. Do you have an online course you want to develop? We want to hear about it. More than likely, our EasyCampus Virtual School Builder platform will help you bring your curriculum or training materials to life in a safe and secure setting.

EasyCampus is free for up to 25 users, and more customizable paid packages start at just $39/month for up to 500 registered users.

Managing Your Course Certificates http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/218-managing-your-course-certificates.html Online learners like certificates.

More than a grade, certificates provide a visual and downloadable confirmation of success after completing a virtual class. For administrators and course creators, they can be linked to quizzes and other assessments, offering another way to track compliance.

We're happy to announce a new tool for EasyCampus owners. It's an Add-On called the Certificate Viewer and provides administrators and students with convenient on-screen access to all certificate data across an entire EasyCampus.

 EasyCampus Certificate Viewer

When installed, the Certificate Viewer is placed on your landing page and can be inserted as an HTML block anywhere on your EasyCampus. Learners view only their own certificates. Administrators can also restrict user access altogether.

Improvements for the EasyCampus LMS http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/210-improvements-for-the-easycampus-lms.html Recently, Educadium carried out a large update to our EasyCampus Virtual School Builder platform. Benefits include more affordable, templated features and new pricing packages, available to prospective and existing EasyCampus users.

At the same time, we made a number of small but significant changes to improve performance and to squash a few bugs. It's all part of Educadium's ongoing commitment to build and maintain the best and most affordable learning management system.

 Why Choose EasyCampus?

Updates and Upgrades:

  • Improved the Subscription Upgrade page for existing campuses to allow campus owners to
select new pricing packages. A link is available to admins within every EasyCampus
  • Improved course backup/restore capabilities so that HTML blocks can now be restored correctly
  • Installed a new logo refresh capability to alleviate browser cache issues associated with the logo upload tool

EasyCampus Bug Fixes:

  • Notification functionality fixed to prevent faulty error messages
  • Gradebook error fixed so that course quizzes in selected courses report more accurately
  • Error messages fixed so that they don't contain faulty links
  • Miscellaneous language fixes for grammatical errors or misleading information
  • Miscellaneous theme updates to fix small CSS errors

On the horizon, expect to see a major update to the text-based help files visible across the EasyCampus system. It was a major support project, but this will improve the on-screen help available to campus administrators and users. These new help files will be pushed out to all existing EasyCampus installations in the coming weeks.

Of course, we continue to enhance our publicly available Support pages. If you haven't visited this area, filled with step guides and videos, we encourage you to do so, especially in advance of building your first courses.

Thanks to all of our users for their feedback. It's helping us improve EasyCampus for educators and trainers around the world.

New Pricing Options for EasyCampus http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/208-new-pricing-options-for-easycampus.html Educadium has some exciting new updates to share. Online learning has just gotten a little easier.

This summer, we rolled out a new online store for our EasyCampus Add-Ons. These Add-Ons, such as Google Apps Integration and Enhanced Reporting, are now available for purchase (most for under $1,000). They come with a 90-day limited warranty and the full support of our Professional Services team.

Now, we have gone a step further and incorporated and streamlined some of the most popular Add-Ons and services into several convenient (and powerful) subscription packages.

This has resulted in some name changes to our offerings with three, more distinct tiers of subscriptions--Standard, Preferred and Premium. We still offer the free "Express" and custom-built packages.

The older Professional, Community, and Enterprise subscriptions have now become part of the Standard subscription--at the same low price starting at $39/month for up to 500 registered users. All new subscription bundles are available today in a variety of user configurations and payment options.

What's different about the new plans? EasyCampus owners can now start off with more popular features through the Preferred and Premium subscriptions, saving valuable time and money.

We think the best value by far is with the Preferred subscription. Starting at just $99/month for 500 users, the new Preferred packages comes pre-installed with some high-quality and useful features:

  • Enhanced Reporting
  • Conditional Activities
  • Course Bundles
  • Form Maker

For small and large organizations who need more service, support, and professional branding, we offer the Premium subscription. Starting at $99/month for 250 users, the new Premium package includes:

  • Everything in the Preferred package
  • Additional Admin Training and Resources
  • Custom Theme and URL

Inside your existing EasyCampus in the My Account area, you can upgrade at any time to the new packages with pricing based on the number of expected users. A complete description is found on our Pricing page, where you can sign up for an EasyCampus with a credit card or through PayPal.

If you're a current EasyCampus subscriber, no action is necessary. Feel free to see if one of the newer bundles meets your needs or add additional accounts as needed for your newly named Standard package. Add-Ons and custom services are still available to all EasyCampus owners.

If you're an Express user or are new to EasyCampus, please contact Educadium Support with any questions about the new tiered offerings. We're also happy to arrange a webinar for all prospective and current customers to review all of the options.

Google Apps for EasyCampus http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/204-google-apps-for-easycampus.html Today, Educadium released three new Add-Ons for our EasyCampus Virtual School Builder Platform. These optional services provide additional power and flexibility to one of the world's best values in learning management systems. They are available in the EasyCampus Add-On store on the Educadium website.

So what's new? Plenty. We're excited to offer our first Google Add-On. The newest offerings include:

  • Google Apps Integration ($1,995). Organizations want seamless access to their Google Apps and user accounts within EasyCampus. This is ideal for many schools where Google tools are used. The powerful Add-On integrates a variety of Google services (Google Docs, Google Calendar, and Gmail) and enables seamless cross-authentication within your EasyCampus.
  • Session Tracking ($995). Educators and trainers often need to estimate online “seat time” for compliance or regulatory purposes. The Session Tracking Add-On lets administrators add a block to any EasyCampus course in order to track session time based on user click activity. The data of all registered user session times can be downloaded for record-keeping.
  • Form Maker ($495). There are many uses for the versatile Form Maker Add-On. Educators and administrators often need to collect information about users before they enroll them in online courses. Form Maker makes it easy to create simple or advanced forms for registration or course-related purposes. Collected data can then be downloaded as a spreadsheet.

Google

These new Add-Ons solve real-world learning concerns, and we're happy to offer them to our subscribers. Pricing includes installation, training, and documentation. Visit the Add-On page today for more information. Or contact support@educadium if you have further technical questions.

E-rate Program Information http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/200-e-rate-program-information.html Sometimes, a small program can have a big impact.

In 1996, as part of the Federal Telecommunications Act, the U.S. government set up a subsidy program to defray the cost of telecommunications services, Internet access and other communications. E-rate is the common term that refers to this "Universal Service" program.

Since 1998, schools and libraries have benefited greatly, with authorized vendors providing discounted access to telecommunications services. Today, more than 90% of all U.S. classrooms are connected to the Internet, with some 82% of public schools and 61% of public libraries receiving E-rate funds. Small and rural schools are big winners.

The Federal E-rate program, managed by the nonprofit Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), enables eligible schools and libraries to receive funding of up to 90% for new and existing network and telecommunications services. The discounts are based on geography and the number of students who are eligible to participate. Please contact USAC for eligibility rules and updates to the E-rate program.

As a trusted partner to schools and libraries, Educadium has been selected to join the E-rate program. Your school can receive discounts for hosting services and infrastructure related to Educadium's EasyCampus Virtual School Builder LMS.

Our service provider information number (SPIN) is 143034281.

For your school's E-rate initiatives, Educadium is ready to help implement a scalable learning management system and online school or training program. Please contact info@educadium.com for more details.

The Best E-Learning Tools http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/199-the-best-e-learning-tools.html Educadium's EasyCampus Virtual School Builder LMS is the flexible and convenient way to build a powerful and scalable virtual classroom or online training program. It incorporates features found in the best course management systems--and at a fraction of the cost.

As a top LMS, EasyCampus is winning kudos from nonprofits, businesses, teachers, and trainers looking for value without sacrificing quality.

Recently, eLearn Magazine did a roundup of some of the top e-learning tools. The goal was to identify the "best ways for face-to-face trainers to add a component of e-learning to their repertoire, without the assistance of a fancy IT team or tens of thousands of dollars of investment."

EasyCampus was selected as one of the leading learning management vendors. Starting at just $39/month for up to 500 users, EasyCampus is a great way to build an online learning program.

Read the entire article called Online Learning 101 by Susan Landay. It has some great information and recommendations for trainers, instructional designers, and school administrators.

Add-Ons To Improve Online Learning http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/198-add-ons-to-improve-online-learning.html Educadium’s EasyCampus Virtual School Builder supports thousands of educational, nonprofit and corporate users in dozens of countries. The hosted learning management platform features powerful course templates, discussion forums, quiz-building tools, and password-protected access to learning materials.

Out of the box, EasyCampus is a great way to store and deliver documents, webinars, PowerPoints, and videos to a global audience hungry for convenient access to online learning materials. It's free to get started and complete packages for a branded campus start at just $39/month for up to 500 users.

 Why Choose EasyCampus?

But wait, there's more, as those late-night infomercials might say. Educadium offers optional add-ons to improve performance and functionality. At the same time, it's another way for you to customize your learning program. EasyCampus Add-Ons are offered through our Professional Services team, so contact us for details. Add-Ons are available only to paid subscribers--another reason to upgrade from the free Express version.

The range of options is varied, and it's easy to mix and match various features. One-time pricing for installation starts at $150 and full costs will depend on the level of customization and engineering required for your learning requirements.

Here are five of our most popular EasyCampus Add-Ons:

  • Enhanced Reporting. You'll be able to track learners through custom records that capture registration data, quiz scores, course revenues, enrollment dates, and more. Data is compiled in near real time, and you can download a spreadsheet to your desktop for further analysis. Reporting is crucial for many accredited learning programs, so we always recommend this Add-On.
  • Course Bundling. Do you need to sell an entire program comprised of several courses? You may need course bundling. This allows you to create groups of courses and sell them for one low price. Payments are handled through our CampusPay e-commerce system, which allows for credit cards or PayPal transactions.
  • Conditional Activities. With self-paced learning, you often want to track the progress of your learners and keep them from taking a quiz or getting their certificate before completing certain activities or reviewing a PowerPoint. For complete control of your learning activities, you need the Conditional Activities Add-On.
  • Custom Course Template. The EasyCampus Course Wizard comes preloaded with five powerful course templates for creating self-paced or facilitated courses. It's the fastest way we know how to create an effective online course with multiple lessons. But sometimes, an organization wants to create a custom course with specific learning activities and be able to replicate it quickly. With our Custom Template Add-On, we can help design and then add a custom course template to your Course Wizard.
  • Enhanced Customer Support. Enhanced Support goes beyond Educadium's much touted unlimited online help ticket support. Get production help and phone assistance for up to 120 minutes every month. Need help or advice in laying out a course or entire online program? Just call. Plans start at $995/6 months, and we can customize a support program to suit the needs of your organization.

There are more EasyCampus Add-Ons available, including registration and enrollment tools. So drop us a line, and we'd be happy to show you how to super-charge your EasyCampus today.

Distance Learning News and LMS Usage http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/197-trends-in-distance-learning-and-lms-usage.html There is an interesting report about online learning released this week from the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA).

The SIIA describes how the  traditional learning management system (LMS) has changed in educational institutions. K-12 mobile device sales are growing 200% a year. With the influx of these new technologies, particularly low-cost netbooks, the role of the LMS has shifted from controlling learning to augmenting a diverse edu-tech environment.

 E-learning News

One in five schools and districts that don't already offer online courses expect to do so in the next two school years. Much of this usage won't be pure distance courses but hybrid learning, where students are engaged in both classroom and online activities. Indeed, we think hybrid courses will become the norm, bridging traditional education with digital devices and learning management platforms.

Certainly, students like the social networking opportunities of technology in the classroom. But will traditional teachers take to it? We see adoption of hybrid learning fastest at independent and religious schools, where the demand for innovative solutions outpaces the supply of bureaucratic inertia.

With fall term just around the corner, school administrators should ask themselves: Do I have the right kind of learning technologies and teacher-training programs in place? If you haven't developed an LMS or hybrid learning strategy, summer is a good time to begin the planning and implementation process.

Review the options, including Educadium's all-inclusive and affordable Virtual School Box package using the EasyCampus Virtual School Builder platform. It includes consulting services and hosting to help even the smallest school create a professional online learning program.

Virtual Classroom Help and Training http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/195-virtual-classroom-help-and-training.html This week, Educadium revamped its help systems and support materials. It's an ongoing effort to make it super-simple to create an EasyCampus online school, virtual classroom, or training program.

First, we heard from many users that they wanted more materials available publicly on www.educadium.com. There is now a tab on the homepage called Support, with materials for new and experienced e-learners. Some of those downloads include revised step guides, the latest campus administration manual, and access to the EasyCampus Knowledge Base--a compendium of helpful answers to common questions.

New EasyCampus Support Page

We've also overhauled our help ticketing system. The goal: Get you better answers more quickly. Help tickets can now be completed on our website or inside your EasyCampus. Some of the useful features include:

  • Ticket submissions for unregistered users
  • Better file format and attachment support to help clarify user questions
  • Foreign language translation capabilities for non-English speakers
  • Improved forms and interface

What hasn't changed is the fast, expert responses from our online Support team. Most tickets are closed successfully within one business day. If we don't have an immediate answer, we'll tell you straight away and when you can expect a response. Need your own personal help desk? Ongoing campus administration and customized production help is available through our Professional Services group.

Go ahead and check out our new EasyCampus Support area as you create your online learning program. It's always free--and our team is waiting to hear from you.

LMS Choices, EasyCampus Customers http://www.educadium.com/educadium-blog/191-lms-choices-easycampus-customers.html Educadium has some great customers. They are serious trainers and educators on the cutting edge of the knowledge industry. They want a powerful yet affordable learning management platform to realize their dreams, not a lightweight Web 2.0 app. Around the world, schools, nonprofits and businesses are building exciting new online ventures with EasyCampus.

More importantly, today's learning professionals need a partner to support them as they grow. The LMS "engine" is certainly important, but it's the partner who supports your e-learning "vehicle" and vision that matters most. Our Professional Services group is the best in the industry, and our ability to customize and extend the traditional LMS sets us apart from garden-variety hosting companies.

Why Choose EasyCampus?

But don't take our word for it. We thought we'd let our customers describe their experiences with us.

"Educadium’s great tutorials and templates made setting up my campus a snap," says childcare trainer Tammy Marino. "We enjoyed the step-by-step instructions and responsive help team. Our company-branded campus made my clients feel comfortable."

On a new page, we've collected more testimonials about Educadium and our EasyCampus Virtual School Builder hosting services.

We know you have choices--and we'll even help you sort through the clutter. Whether you're an e-learning newbie or a Moodle expert, we get it and are here to help you realize your public or private learning goals.
