Forecasting for Learning Executives The slow-growth economy has had a big impact on all organizations, large and small. Even as some business sectors make a comeback, most business leaders and learning executives remain uncertain and cautious about their prospects in 2013.

That uncertainty impacts directly the budgets of training professionals, educators, and HR directors.

According to a recent U.S. study, the outlook for training fell for the third straight quarter in late 2012. This comes from research for the Learning Executive Confidence Index (LXCI).


The good news? These scores remain higher than they were in 2009 and 2010 when the economy was at its lowest point. The LXCI is a six-month measurement of attitudes by the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD).

Some interesting highlights from the LXCI study:

  • 70% of learning executives believe corporate performance will be better in the next six months.
  • 56% believe the resources needed to meet training goals will be the same or worse in early 2013.
  • 51.4% think that over the next six months, training will improve organizational performance.

So while the near term is a bit cloudy, most learning professionals expect the training function will receive greater attention and higher funding within the next year. However, almost half feel that there will be an increase within 18 months.

What does this mean for your organization? You have to do more with less, especially in the first half of 2013. Learning management and course development must be accomplished in an environment of reduced funding. Look to vendors and partners (including Educadium) that can best stretch your dollars for hosting and content development.

Online Education Grows and Grows Is your organization changing with the times?

Except when there are major tipping points, we often forget about the ongoing transformations going on with technology right under our feet.

According to Professor Doug Ward, fast Internet connections, computers and smart phones now provide easy and unprecedended access to online material. This creates the potential to "speak with, work with, and learn from nearly anyone in the world."

Ward says that information (once something people had to seek out) now flows easily to them. For trainers and educators, the changes have major implications.

It's possible now to capture voice lectures and training and put it online at very little cost. Inexpensive storage on platforms like those offered by Educadium has made retrieval cheap and easy. The iPad and other on-the-go tools have provided portable means of accessing and creating information.

The upshot? Your organization may need to move more agressively to keep up with your computer-savvy workforce and user base.

In the book Liberating Learning, Moe and Chubb say that this technological transformation is "reshaping the fundamentals of how human beings from every corner of the globe communicate, interact, conduct their business, and simply live their lives from day to day." This will mean a system-wide change in the processes used to teach, learn and train.

Live Online Classroom Tips Self-paced learning has taken the training world by storm.

It's cost-effective, media-rich, and convenient for end-users and admins. The expenses are upfront, but once content is built and deployed professionally on a good LMS (hint, hint), self-paced learning pays big dividends. Educadium is a leader in hosted self-paced training and other online learning methods.

But it's a big world online, so it's always smart to look at alternative and complimentary training and education methods.

Training consultant Cindy Huggett is a big fan of synchronous virtual training--in other words, webinars, whiteboarding, screensharing, and live virtual classrooms. These one-to-many and many-to-many sessions can produce terrific learning outcomes.

So if you thought webinars were just for marketers, then it's time to think again.

A good virtual experience takes time and planning. What is the best way to engage a global audience in a live training session? Huggett has some tips for trainers:

  • use visuals
  • speak slowly
  • choose words carefully
  • post discussion questions either on screen or in a chat window
  • call on participants by name
  • and be mindful of potential language limitations

She also recommends working with at least one more person, a producer to help with questions and technology issues. Huggett has some solid advice and resources for facilitating a virtual training session.

Planning A Great Online Course We speak to a lot of people who are transitioning from live classroom to online instruction.

One of the first questions we ask is: "Do you have any course materials?'

The answer is usually "Yes, we have great course content."

Unfortunately, most of those materials were conceived for live instruction. Self-paced courses are very different from on-ground classroom training. Order, structure, and interactive materials must substitute for that smiling trainer at the podium, who is often conveying more enthusiasm than information. 

Says Dr. Joel Gendelman in a recent article: "Customizing or creating virtual instruction is more demanding than putting together face-to-face training. In a face-to-face class, you have a great deal of social presence by virtue of your being physically in the same room."


We find that many trainers underestimate the translation from live to virtual training. For most first-time online trainers, we recommend that they work with a professional consultant to help them with the transition. Many new steps and processes must be considered, and you'll need to pull together that virtual "shoebox" of learning materials, probably scattermed among different employees and desktops. However, the extra upfront time and expense will pay big dividends in user satisfaction.  

There are some big differences in delivery as you move forward. In a classroom, for instance, we might be OK watching a 60 minute video. But online on a PC or iPad, users are less patient and might tolerate only a few minutes of passive viewing at a time. Rather, learners welcome numerous short video clips as they move through a course. In other words, the outcomes might be the same but the learning path and structure are very different.

The key in setting up a successful online course is to first take an inventory of your instructional assets. These can be PowerPoints, manuals, videos, or existing online courseware. When these materials are categorized (the virtual shoebox), we can then match them to their proper place in the course outline. Next, we might consider layout, branding and other learning objects that can be incorporated within a professional learning management platform.

At the same time, it's important to review the content. Is it a 20 year-old VHS, which will seem dated even if digitized? You might wish to author new materials or make content enhancements that would improve user engagement and success. A virtual instruction planning form and a good instructional designer will make the process much easier.

Just throwing up a musty PowerPoint and quiz are not enough these days to satisfy demanding learners, who respond to interactive multimedia and well-designed courses.

Protecting Privacy for Online Training Recently, the White House unveiled its Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights as part its larger privacy initiative. It's an important topic for trainers and educators, who must oversee sensitive data and who are accountable to regulators and accrediting bodies.

"By following this blueprint, companies, consumer advocates and policymakers can help protect consumers and ensure the Internet remains a platform for innovation and economic growth," said President Obama.

Resolutions for Better Course Management Welcome to 2012!

After returning from holiday festivities, managers are thinking hard about how to use new technologies--like cloud-hosted platforms--more effectively. Training to boost productivity is high on the list.

Is this the year that your organization focuses on online training and education as a mission-critical part of the business? We certainly hope so, and Educadium's EasyCampus learning management products will be there to help.

But it takes planning and resolve to get those old PowerPoints and videos off of the CDs and into a web-accessible, self-paced training program.


Here are some "resolutions" and tips that might help get you over the finish line:

  • Decide why you want to manage your courses and training online. Sounds simple but it's not, especially if you've been doing on-ground training for years. Online is a very different beast, and the materials may be presented differently. Keep your goals in mind as you face the challenges.

    Do you want to save money? Make money from tuition courses? Improve accessibility and convenience for your employees or members? If you don't have a compelling reason to move educational materials online, it will be difficult to champion the cause internally. With clear objectives, you'll be able to focus your priorities as you plan your training site and courses.
  • Take stock of your digital and traditional assets. Think about your current website outlets and how (and where) they could link to your new training materials. Or maybe you want your new educational site to pull double-duty as your main web presence. Take time to consult with your website managers, marketers, and mobile specialists and map out your requirements. If you have accreditation or regulatory guidelines, take time to review these to make sure your online plans conform to these requirements. You might be able to move all or only a portion of your training online.

    Next, itemize all of the assets sitting around the office that could be used in an online course--manuals, PowerPoints, videos, even lecture notes. The more planning you do, the more informed you'll be when researching learning management options.

    At this stage, don't worry about what the online course will look like or what tools you will use. Just put together a spreadsheet with all of your media assets in one place. Remember: The more you do on your own, the less it's going to cost you.
  • Be realistic about your budget. We know that money is tight, and we designed our service to be affordable. Among elearning companies, there are many options--from free services to million-dollar contractors. Focus your efforts on partners that meet your budget parameters and be upfront about it. Internally, don't forget to allocate money for staffing and administration. Somebody will need to manage the users and update materials. Admin training should also be part of the budget.

    If your budget is next to nothing, then you may need to hold off on super-interactive, multimedia course materials. Yes, we know that everyone loves video, but Hollywood production values come with a price. You can still create effective, attractive courses with quizzes and certificates.   • Learn the lingo. No, you don't need to be some elearning specialist or instructional designer. But read up on common features of learning management systems and course-authoring tools. Decide if it's important whether the LMS is hosted or if you need it installed at your enterprise. (EasyCampus is available only as a hosted platform.) Sketch out the desired user experience, starting with the registration process to the homepage, courses, and admin reporting.

    Some learning systems come packaged with a lot of features--but you might be paying for things you don't need. Ask to play around with a free version or look at the demo.   • Start now, start small.  If your team is inexperienced, you'll need to work more closely with a qualified vendor or instructional designer--on course planning, production, and hosting. Research different companies and even use a consultant if necessary. But don't get paralyzed by feature comparisons. Find a company (or two) that you can relate to and that fills your key requirements. Then get going. You'll probably want to change things as you go, and that's to be expected. Along the way, your team will gain valuable elearning experience.

New EasyCampus ePortfolio Add-On Released Educadium is pleased to announce the availability of the new EasyCampus ePortfolio Add-On.

For more than a decade, ePortfolios (or electronic portfolios) have been used in academic settings to help students share important digital work with their teachers and fellow students. Increasingly, ePortfolios are being used to assess (or grade) classroom efforts, especially as a collection of coursework over a period of time.

Corporate trainers are also finding many important uses for ePortfolios. Users can safely store materials, such as resumes and videos, which may be shared later with mentors or prospective employers. It's both a learning tool within a course and a record of achievement.

EasyCampus Monday Update Following the widespread Amazon outages last week, Educadium's IT team put into place contigency plans to minimize any downtime for customers. In fact, EasyCampus was operational late Thursday--ahead of many other leading websites. Access has been restored to thousands of users around the world.

Nevertheless, some EasyCampus may still be experiencing minor latency issues for brief periods of time. This is expected today, and users should clear their browswer cache and retry. More persistent access issues should be reported immediately to

Amazon EC2 Outage Update
As of Thursday afternoon EST, access to Educadium's EasyCampus LMS platform remains limited. A partial failure at Amazon Web Services' cloud-computing infrastructure is to blame, affecting Educadium as well as thousands of other companies. Educadium's web site and support areas remain operational.

According to CNET, the outage struck the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service at Amazon's northern Virginia site. The problems began at 1:41 a.m. PT.

Educadium's IT team is working to rebuild the disk images in a new availability zone unaffected by the outage. Access to EasyCampus sites could occur later this afternoon.

Educadium has built a reliable e-learning architecture on top of Amazon's global cloud platform. Fortunately, these occurrences are rare but are nonetheless frustrating for us and our customers.

We'll post more information as we get it.

UPDATE: As of 9:20pm EST/6:20pm PST, access to EasyCampus sites is being restored with most sites fully operational. We are continuing to monitor the situation for quality assurance.

Associations Embrace Online Education In the popular imagination, distance education is something for virtual high schools and for-profit universities. The truth is far different. Online learning has penetrated every aspect of our educational and training lives.

Over 1.5 million nonprofits were registered with the Internal Revenue Service in 2008. Charities, religious groups, and trade associations are eager to communicate and educate their stakeholders on important issues. That's where online learning tools can help.

According to a new report from Ambient Insight, the demand for self-paced online learning by associations will grow a healthy 14.3% annually over the next five years. Here's what the latest survey says:

Associations spend over $6.2 billion annually on educational events and until recently, most of those events were in physical venues. Associations were once slow adopters of learning technology in general, but this is no longer true. This segment is moving fast to Self-paced eLearning. The current forecast has been revised significantly upward from previous forecasts.

Association members are busy, successful people. For convenience, it makes sense to move training and continuing education from onsite to online venues. Certainly, trade shows, local networking events, and annual conferences will continue to be important aspects of association membership. Going forward, expect a healthy mix of face time and technology to match members with skills and business opportunities.

Corporate E-Learning Programs That Work The problem with many corporate training programs is not the eye-numbing content or the rules for compliance. Rather, it's forcing harried employees to bend their schedules in order to participate in inconvenient on-site programs, which compromise workers' personal or professional lives.

Thankfully, may companies and nonprofits are getting the message. In an interesting article by Anna Tims from The Guardian in the UK, firms are "waking up to the advantages of informal training managed by individuals around their own timetables."


For example, Cable & Wireless lets staff access online libraries of content, recorded webinars, and other personal development materials. It's a buffet-style, do-it-yourself approach to online learning and career development.

Jane Hart, founder of the Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies, says companies shouldn't try to act like universities: "There is a heavy focus on designing formal content-rich courses, pushed down to end-users, and managed, tracked and monitored in command and control systems." Informal and more social aspects of learning are now in vogue.

Some additional e-learning tips and tricks for up-and-coming learning organizations:

Know what's out there. Provide access to free lectures, videos and modules on iTunes, YouTube, or the UK's Open University.

Share the pain. Enlist support from internal champions who can set targets and timetables. Recruit colleagues who are motivated by e-learning trends and social networking.

Stay focused.  Workers should have enough time for e-learning and avoid the temptation to cram it in all in at once. The best formats are organized into frequent, short periods of study--for instance, 15 minutes at the start of work, 15 minutes at lunch, and another 15 minutes in the evening.

Know your goals. Strong learning organizations understand and communicate the benefits of e-learning and what employees can get out of it.

As you can see, very little of this really about the technology. Rather, it's about coming up with new ways of thinking about time-shifted, self-paced, self-directed learning. The best e-learning programs accommodate the needs of the modern firm and the busy lives of employees.

E-Commerce for Learning Management With the New Year upon us, it's time to follow through on those annual resolutions. For many EasyCampus owners, that wish involves the creation of shiny new courses and cost-effective ways to profit from online learning.

Educadium's EasyCampus Virtual School Builder LMS platform includes a built-in way to sell courses. It's called CampusPay, and there is no charge to set up the service.

Improvements for the EasyCampus LMS Recently, Educadium carried out a large update to our EasyCampus Virtual School Builder platform. Benefits include more affordable, templated features and new pricing packages, available to prospective and existing EasyCampus users. 

At the same time, we made a number of small but significant changes to improve performance and to squash a few bugs. It's all part of Educadium's ongoing commitment to build and maintain the best and most affordable learning management system.

New Pricing Options for EasyCampus Educadium has some exciting new updates to share. Online learning has just gotten a little easier.

E-rate Program Information Sometimes, a small program can have a big impact.

In 1996, as part of the Federal Telecommunications Act, the U.S. government set up a subsidy program to defray the cost of telecommunications services, Internet access and other communications. E-rate is the common term that refers to this "Universal Service" program.

Since 1998, schools and libraries have benefited greatly, with authorized vendors providing discounted access to telecommunications services. Today, more than 90% of all U.S. classrooms are connected to the Internet, with some 82% of public schools and 61% of public libraries receiving E-rate funds. Small and rural schools are big winners.

The Federal E-rate program, managed by the nonprofit Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), enables eligible schools and libraries to receive funding of up to 90% for new and existing network and telecommunications services. The discounts are based on geography and the number of students who are eligible to participate. Please contact USAC for eligibility rules and updates to the E-rate program.
